Got your attention, didn’t I?

Maybe your taste buds perked up in anticipation of a treat. I hope this blog offers at least partial satisfaction.
What do chocolate chip cookies and CS Lewis have in common? Nothing, I would have said yesterday. But today I read the introduction of a fascinating book by Kurt Bruner and Jim Ware, entitled Finding God in the Land of Narnia.

In the Introduction, Bruner discusses CS Lewis’ conversion. He asserts that the change came about through fantasy stories. Lewis was enticed into the Kingdom by reading stories by George McDonald.

Bruner says the stories awakened in Lewis a desire for something more, like the tantalizing smell of a plate of chocolate chip cookies, “…a whiff of joy, making him hungry for the full reality of its source.” *

I think that was true of me as well. My imagination was captured by the testimonies of friends, and eventually the stories of Jesus.

The wind of the Holy Spirit blew across the sweet-smelling “cookies” and enticed me to draw closer and become more active in my pursuit of the source of delight.

Most children enjoy cookies, and chocolate chip cookies rank among the favorites. Just as the aroma of cookies attracts seekers in the natural realm, so it can be in the spiritual realm.

When we “set the table” and offer a tantalizing treasure, our children can be enticed into the wonderful world of the Spirit.
